September 15 - December 15, 2021 (No class November 24)
In this online series Paul DuSold explores how and why great paintings affect us by making copies of master paintings.
By watching the recreation of a master painting from start to finish the viewer sees how the qualities of color, shape, light and space engage the imagination as the painting goes from a blank canvas to a finished masterpiece. By seeing the painting develop, the viewer experiences the painting with much greater understanding!
As the painting develops, Paul describes every step of his experience walking in the footsteps of the artist who created the original. Context of social and aesthetic history will also be discussed.
Participants are allowed to ask questions at the end of each session.
Starting September 15 we will look at the work of three 20th century Philadelphia Painters who were influenced by the three great traditions of Western Painting: Classicism, Romanticism and Impressionism. These artists were committed to their influences even as those traditions were being dismissed by ideas of Modernism.
- Arthur DeCosta (1921- 2004) was a figurative painter strongly influenced by the work of Titian and Poussin: the classical tradition
- Seymour Remenick (1923 – 1999) was a landscape and still-life painter. Remenick was influenced by the painting and ideas of Corot; the Romantic tradition
- Rose Naftulin (1925 – 2005) was greatly influenced by impressionist and post- impressionist painting.
Paul will copy and discuss examples of each of these artist works. Artists who knew and studied with these three will also be in the sessions to offer their first-hand knowledge.
